CAE technology changes and projects – 2026

Summary:
The following work is going to take place over the Summer months and into the second half of 2026. There will be additional information and specific dates communicated as we progress through the summer.

DUO changes – On July 28th, CAE retired our specific instance of DUO and adopted the campus DUO.
CAE Storage Migration – Starting June 15th, CAE will be migrating all files and folders to a new storage system over the summer. This will result in momentary loss of access for personal files. Read below for more information about shared, group storage.
Linux UID/GID Changes – CAE has adopted campus ID assignments and re-permissioned all files storage on our systems.

CAE DUO

On July 28, we retired the CAE/CoE Duo in favor of using the same Duo profile as campus NetID.

CAE Storage Migration

Starting Monday, June 15, we are beginning our work to migrate home directories and data (most refer to this at their I: drive) to our new storage solution.

The file storage solution hosting home directories, group space, and a number of department file spaces will reach its end of life this summer. CAE will be migrating the data to a new storage platform.  In the new storage platform, access rights are no longer split.  For Linux, this means the POSIX rights have the potential to not match 100% in the new location. CAE is making the effort to manipulate the file system permissions so the rights shown on Linux match as close as possible.

Home directories completed their migration process the week of July 13th.

Departmental group storage[1] will require a service outage to complete. CAE will be scheduling the time for each of the spaces to migrate with the departments. The length of time of the service outage is purely a function of the number of files on the system. We will stage as much of the data ahead of time, but to make sure we have all the data correctly copied, we will need to walk the entire file system while access is turned off.  For those that use this departmental storage, we will have the department communicate when the migration will take place.

Other group storage will take place with a service outage (planned for Aug 14-17). While we could move each group to a new location one at a time, access to the space on both Windows and Linux would change.  To keep access to the storage as unchanged as possible, we have opted to move all of “groupspace.cae.wisc.edu” at once. We will stage the files to the new location, and then with a storage access outage, verify all files are copied and enable group space access back on the new location.  We expect the outage to begin on Friday evening, August 14th, at 6:00 PM and be completed by Monday morning, August 17th, potentially sooner.

Action required and what to expect:

• • Please log out of your account on Friday, August 14th at the end of the day to ensure the best experience.
  • A temporary service outage will be required during the migration of your group’s storage.
  • CAE IT will copy as much data as possible in advance to minimize downtime.
  • During the outage, access to the storage will be disabled while we verify that all files have been successfully migrated.

CAE UID/GID changes

We worked to merge our UID/GID numbering to match campus (DoIT) assignments.  This work was completed in early June 2026.
