If the linux distribution was not able to pick up the IP address through dhcp, it should be statically configured. There are two ways of configuring a static IP, use of a command line or configuring the network file.

Become root in a terminal and type in as a command ifconfig.
ComputerName:~# ifconfig
To run from a user account:
username@computername:~# /sbin/ifconfig
displays information about the network connection.
