Off-Campus Users
With a little set up work you can access all the CAE resources, including applications and email, and be fully productive from an off-campus location. Reading and Sending Email
  • Reading email involves the same setup as when on campus, as documented on our page. However, you should be aware that if you use the pop protocol and download your mail at home, it will NOT be available to you at work unless you specifically set up your mail program to leave mail on server.

Connecting to CAE Lab Machines Remotely
  • To connect to a Linux or Unix lab machine, use VNC by following the instructions in our knowledge base.
  • To connect to a Windows lab machine, use a Remote Desktop Access connection.
Use of WiscVPN WiscVPN is used when you are off-campus and want to use a resource that normally requires that you be on-campus. For example, both outgoing email and DoIT's Electronic Shelf don't work off campus unless you are using VPN. If you need WiscVPN, follow the instructions at Installing and Using the WiscVPN Client to get it up and running. Getting your files from the COE Servers If you need to get files from the servers (your F, I, and U drives on campus), you can use an FTP program such as SecureFX. Instructions for setting up and using SecureFX, Filezilla, WinSCP and other FTP programs are available at our Setting up a FTP Client page. You can get more detailed instructions, including how to FTP on Unix, at our File Transfer page.
