Note: The following information applies to individuals who read their email from the College's mail server (@
cae.wisc.edu). If you read your mail from a department server (@ece.wisc.edu) or
DoIT's WiscMail (@wisc.edu) server this does not apply.
What is SpamAssassin and how does it work?
To help identify email messages which are considered spam (unsolicited commercial email) or contain pornographic materials, CAE has installed a program called "SpamAssassin" on the College's mail server.
SpamAssassin searches each incoming message for known patterns, which in the past have been identified as consistent with either spam or pornographic material. Any mail message that is identified as having met certain criteria has the Subject line altered to include: *SPAM* as a visual cue, and is then sent on to the user for further action.
Setting up SpamAssassin for your CAE account:
- Go to "My Account".
- A login window will pop up. Log in with your CAE account and password.
Once you are logged in a number of sections will appear. Each section contains information pertaining to your CAE account.
- In the Email section (box), click on "Set up "Spam Assassin"
- You may want to complete the "white" and/or the "black" list sections.
The "white" list contains an email address that is getting marked as SPAM, but I want to receive their email. The "black" list contains an email address that I want to block from sending me any email.
- To set Spam Assassin scroll down to the bottom of the page and select Okay. A page confirming that the update has been done will appear. Click on Back to CAE Account Management page to return to the Account Profile page.
Consult the CAE's
SpamAssassin FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page for optimization tips and other hints.
How will SpamAssassin change my email?
- In the header lines: For use in filtering, SpamAassassin inserts the word: ******SPAM****** into the subject line.
- In the body of the mail message: For use in filtering, SpamAssassin inserts "X-Spam-Flag:"
SpamAssassin Trainer - The SpamAssassin trainer helps SpamAssassin learn more quickly about messages it missed labeling as spam. This trainer allows you to designate which folders contain spam, which contain "ham" (good mail incorrectly labelled as spam), and which to ignore in training. SpamAssassin remembers mail messages it has analyzed before, and will function more accurately after it has been trained with several hundred messages of each type.
