You may transfer files to and from your CAE network disk space from anywhere on or off campus using these file transfer methods. All of the listed programs are free and use SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol). SFTP is basically a program that transfers files, while making sure other people on the network cannot view your personal data in the process.
Transferring files can be very handy at the end of the semester. It is always a good idea to back up your data, especially if you feel it may be of use in the future. Student accounts are temporary and expire after you leave the university or for non-engineering students are no longer enrolled in engineering courses.
We currently suggest you use one of the following file transfer programs: SecureFX , FileZilla and WinSCP. These programs are free to UW employees, and students.
Attention: The CAE has recently reported problems with SecureFX, and is currently recommending users run FileZilla.
Note: There are numerous reasons why FTP should be avoided as it sends your login name and password over the network in the clear. The programs above are now standard, and FTP connections will not pass through the CoE firewall.
