Renting Disk Space

What is paid space?

Paid space is disk space managed by CAE that departments can rent for the use of a specific individual. It is made available on a per-semester basis in 1 gigabyte increments.

Why would I want to pay CAE to manage my disk space?

The main benefits for paying CAE to manage disk space for you include reduced computer administration costs for you, greater data availability, nightly backup services, and high performance.

Your costs can be reduced by removing the need for you to purchase a file server, disks, RAID hardware or software, backup hardware and software, and paying a person that has the ability to manage such a server.

The availability of your data is ensured by redundancy in storage hardware. Paid space is served from resilient disk systems, which ensures that even if a hard drive fails, your data is intact and still available. Should the entire server fail, the disks that paid space is on will be moved to another server.

Each night, CAE will perform a backup of the data stored in paid space. The data that is backed up can be recovered for between two and three weeks after it is backed up. See CAE's recovery policy for details.

How much does paid space cost?

The cost is $5 per Gigabyte per month.

What machines have access to paid space?

Any Windows or Linux machine will be able to access the paid space.

How do I purchase paid space?

You can purchase paid space by filling out a request form. Please note that CAE can only accept payment by direct charge of a UW fund.

Can I pay by cash, check, credit card, or debit card?

While CAE did try to find a method for allowing a more flexible payment, we were unable to establish a means to pay by cash, check, credit card, or debit card. The only payment method that we can accept is direct charge of a UW fund.
