CAE Overview: Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) is a College of Engineering facility available to any student with an engineering major or enrolled in an engineering course, as well as faculty and staff of the College. CAE provides users access to facilities and resources which allows them to effectively compute on the engineering campus.
Note: All users must be in compliance with all CAE Policies while using CAE facilities or resources. Failure to comply will result in loss of access for a period of time determined on a case by case basis. For more information about CAE see: About Us.
Getting a CAE account: As a new user, you must first get a CAE account. You can activate your CAE account either online or at a Windows workstation in any of the CAE labs. Before you can activate your account, you must have had your University picture ID for about a week in order to be in the system.
Logging In: Users may log-in once their CAE account is functional (usually within an hour of activation). For Windows, you must enter your username and password after pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del while for Linux enter your login name and password at the login prompt. For more information about logging in see: Logging In.
CAE Resources: CAE accounts provide users with the tools to effectively and efficiently compute within the college of engineering. Users have access to a broad range of resources and services which include:
FastStart: FastStart is designed to teach you how to use the various technologies available at the UW-Madison College of Engineering from the very beginning. It is a great place for new users to go to get started using CAE's resources. FastStart provides basic information about buying a computer, getting network access, using CAE Webemail and accessing any of the hundreds of applications CAE offers. For more information see: FastStart.
Labs: CAE labs are located throughout the College of Engineering campus. They provide users access to Windows and Linux machines as well as printing. Some of the labs are open 24 hours a day to provide users access at their convenience. For more information see: Labs.
Printing: Every CAE account will get a total of 300 print units allocated at the start of each semester. Unused allocated units (unlike paid pages) are not carried over to the next semester. The value of each unit is equivalent to $.05. The printing rates are a unit ($.05) for black laser printing and 10 units ($.50) for color laser printing. Additional print units may be purchased at the consultants office in Rm. 172 CAE using your UW debit card. For more information see: Printing.
Consultants: The Consultant's Office is located on first floor of the CAE Center at 1410 Engineering Drive. You can contact them in person by going to Rm. 170 CAE, by emailing helpdesk@cae.wisc.edu or by calling them at 262-5349.For more information see: CAE Consultants.
Wireless Computing: At the College of Engineering the benefits of wireless networking are countless. You can use your personal wireless laptop at nearly any location on the engineering campus to complete coursework as well as print to any CAE lab! All that is needed to connect is a valid CAE account, a computer with wireless capability and a properly configured network card.
Tethered Software and Remote Desktop: Tethered Software and Remote Software are two methods of using CAE's resources without actually being in a CAE lab. Tethered Software allows users to locally install and run some CAE owned and controlled software while connected to the network or Internet. For more information see: Tethered Software and Remote Software.
