Note: If you use more than one of something, join them using plus signs. If you use type, omit title by using
two equal signs in a row. If you use title, omit the = type .
For example: list/payroll=ME==FACULTY@maillist.engr.wisc.edu mails to all of the M.E. faculty members.
To select by dept only, omit the = title = type part; to select by title or type only, use ENGR for the dept .
Furthermore, a staff/faculty selection can be combined with a student selection by using a slash between them.
For example: list/payroll=CHE/major=CHE=5@maillist.engr.wisc.edu mails to all faculty, staff, and graduate
students in Chemical Engineering.
COE Student Organization & Project Mailing Lists
See
https://www.cae.wisc.edu/mailman/ to subscribe to an existing COE (College of Engineering) mailing list. If
your COE student organization, research group, center, or department would like to establish a new mailing list,
contact mailman@cae.wisc.edu.
College of Engineering Groups
If everyone in a group is associated with the College of Engineering, you can set up a CAE group to which anyone
can send mail. Members of the group can read their mail anywhere, but they must each open up a CAE account
and set up an email forward with the address of their mailbox unless they receive their mail at CAE. To open a CAE
account, go to
https://www.cae.wisc.edu/accounts/newuser/ and follow the directions. One hour or more later, connect
again and go to the "My Account" page (
https://www.cae.wisc.edu/cae-auth/) (unless you want to receive your mail at
CAE). Log in using the assigned
login name. Under "email" at the left, click on “Change It” on the second line. Type in
the address of your mailbox and click “Save Changes”.
Once you have collected everyone's CAE login name, you create the CAE group. First, select a group name: up to eight
lower case letters and digits starting with a letter. Make (create) the group using the Groups Memberships section of the
"My Account" page (
https://www.cae.wisc.edu/cae-auth/).
Group changes take at least 1 hour to take affect. To send email to a group, mail to: group/group-name@cae.wisc.edu
Groups do NOT have to be renewed each semester. We do automatically remove login names that no longer exist from
the group and remove the group when it becomes empty.
Make sure to respect people's privacy!
While it is possible to send mail messages to large groups of people,
such as every graduate student in a department, you should not send
messages to such groups unless nearly everyone in the group would be
interested. Quite simply, do not mass email:
- unauthorized questionnaires or announcements
- membership campaigns for groups not authorized by CAE
- solicitations of any kind: products, services, or donations
- messages which may be offensive or derogatory to any group
- political campaign messages
- a message with return-receipt on
- attachments (use clear text only)
