Emailing Students in a Course
There are two separate methods for e-mailing students: DoIT's method and the CAE's. With the CAE method you can use the same mailing address each semester, and get the current roster for that semester. DoIT generates a new list each semester with a designatioin for the semester. For example, for ISyE 564 for spring 2006, DoIT's email list is isye564-1-s06@lists.wisc.edu while ours for the current semester is list/course=isye=564@maillist.engr.wisc.edu. Follow this link if you would prefer to use DoIT's method please consult Classlists using DoIT. Emailing Students Using the CAE emailer: There is a very easy way of sending email to all the students registered for a given course. Students can be selected by course, by course section, by program, by major, and/or by year in school, by doing the following: To select students by course, use: list/course=dept=number=section=term@maillist.engr.wisc.edu where the course dept is one or more of the following: dept Full Department Name BME CBE CEE CS ECE EMA EPD GLE ISYE INTEREGR ME MSAE NEEP Biomedical Engineering Center for Biological Education Civil and Environmental Engineering Computer Science Electrical and Computer Engineering Engineering Mechanics and Aeronautics Engineering Professional Development Geological Engineering Industrial and Systems Engineering Introduction to Engineering Mechanical Engineering Material Science and Engineering Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics number is the course number (447 for example) section is the course section (1 for example) term is a 4 digit number: where the first 3 digits are the year minus 1900 (use following year for Fall semester); the last digit is 2 for fall, 4 for spring or 6 for summer semester. Here are a few terms: term Corresponding Semester 1064 1066 1072 1074 1076 1082 1084 1086 Spring '06 Summer '06 Fall '06 Spring '07 Summer '07 Fall '07 Spring '08 Summer '08 Example 1: To mail to students who were enrolled in Computer Science 352, section 1 during Fall 2005, you would use:
  • list/course=CS=352=1=1052@maillist.engr.wisc.edu
Example 2: To mail to all Mechanical Engineering 447 students in section 2, current term you would exclude term and come up with:
  • list/course=ME=447=2@maillist.engr.wisc.edu
Example 3: To mail to students in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science 352 regardless of section, omit "=section" and you would get:
  • list/course=ECE+CS=352@maillist.engr.wisc.edu
In addition, it is also possible to send email to large groups of people email to large groups of people-->email to large groups of people--> other than students in a given course. To select students by program, use: program=program@maillist.engr.wisc.edu where program is one or more of the following: program Program Category UNDERGRADCLASS GRADCLASS ENGRCLASS Undergraduates Grad. Students Engineering Classes To mail to pre-engineers only (they are included in UNDERGRADCLASS) use: EGR To select students by major and year, use: major=dept=year@maillist.engr.wisc.edu where the major dept is one or more of the following: dept Full Department Name BME CBE CEE CMPE EE EMA EPD GLE IE ME MSE MSAE NEEP Biomedical Engineering Center for Biological Education Civil and Environmental Engineering Computer Engineering Major Electrical Engineering Engineering and Mechanics and Astronautics Engineering Professional Development Geological Engineering Industrial Engineering Mechanical Engineering Manufacturing Systems Engineering Material Science and Engineering Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics Don't be confuse between MSE and MSAE: MSE is for "Manufacturing System Engineering" and MSAE is for "Material Science Engineering". Mail sent to ECE goes to both EE and CMPE majors. For graduate students use 5 for year; for special students, use 9; for undergraduates, use 1+2+3+4. For example, to send mail to all ME undergraduates use: list/major=ME=1+2+3+4@maillist.engr.wisc.edu To select by major only, omit the "=year" part.
