Creating a Course Web Page
The College of Engineering offers the College of Engineering educators software that allows them the generation of a course homepage. These easy-to-use forms allow educators who have little or no knowledge of HTML programming to construct and maintain a generic course homepage.   Some of the features of the eCOW service:
  • Links can be added to other places on the web.
  • Documents can be uploaded to the server for distribution to class.
  • Drop-boxes can be created for students to turn in assignments online.
  • Forums are available which allow students to interact.
  • The use of passwords allows restricted access of certain documents.
  • Access to entire homepage is restricted to only UW students.
  • Unauthorized changes cannot be made due to password protection.
  • Virtually everything can be edited at a later time if necessary.
Educators who wish to have more control over the content of their course page should use a pseudo CAE account for this purpose. They can then make a link to their page on the central course homepage list on the College of Engineering Website that lists all the course homepages for the current semester. CAE Course Web Pages: Request the course account be created by using the online Request New Account form. Select "Course Account" under Account type. The form will then ask for the Department and course number. For example, if your course is ECE 370, the login name for the pseudo account will be ece370. This is an account that you and your TAs can share for building Web pages for the course. Once the account is created, you will receive a nine digit negative number. Login into any CAE NT workstation as newuser and enter that number as the "ID Number". Once you complete the newuser process, the account becomes available after the top of the next hour. Once the account is activated please log into the account and enter: homepage. This creates a homepage for the new account. You, or one of your TAs, can then cd public_html and edit the homepage.html file. Remove the default contents (little of it is useful for a course) and place what you'd like to see on the page. Once the page starts to look half way reasonable, go to the courses page and add your course to the list.
