Using Norton Personal Firewall
Norton Personal Firewall protects your computer by only allowing certain ports to be used. While this is an excellent security measure, the default settings will sometimes block ports that a legitimate application needs to use. If your applications are generating error messages while trying to access the internet (i.e. "Host cannot be found", "POSIX Error: Permission denied", etc.), Norton Personal Firewall may need to be modified to allow access to these ports.
Allowing/Denying Internet Services
If an application is being denied access by Norton Personal Firewall, a notification window may pop up informing you that an application is trying to access the internet. If the application is one that you trust, click 'change' to change the firewall settings to allow this program to use its ports. However, most times you will probably not get this notification and your program will be shut out from the internet. The following steps will allow you to manually update Norton Personal Firewall.
- To configure Norton Personal Firewall, click on the Symantec logo in the upper right-hand corner of the menubar. Navigate through the menus and click on Norton Personal Firewall->Open Norton Personal Firewall.
Note: This is also accessible via the System Preferences dialog.
- Click on the arrow labeled Service Settings to bring up the drop-down configuration for Norton Personal Firewall. Click on the button labeled New to create a new rule.
- A new window will appear to configure the firewall rule. Type the name for your new service (usually the name of the application that you want to access the network) in the Name box. Some applications are already available in the drop-down menu (click on the arrow next to the name box to view the menu). Optional: Enter something descriptive in the Description box. Click on the Ports tab, if it is not already selected, and then click on New.
- The window that appears is where you enter the port numbers that your application uses. These numbers should be available in the software documentation of the program you're using. If not, a list of common port numbers can be found here. If your application only uses a single port, select Single Port from the drop down menu and enter the port number into the box labeled Port Number. If your application uses a range of ports, select Range of Ports from the drop down menu and enter the port ranges into the corresponding boxes. Click on Save to save the port rule.
- If your application uses more than one range of ports or two or more ports that aren't in sequential order, you will need to create multiple port rules in the Ports window. Click on New and follow the same process listed above for each of the ports or port-ranges you wish to allow access to.
- Click on the Save button to save the service.
- By default Norton Personal Firewall will set up all new services so that all outgoing connections are allowed, and all incoming connections are denied. To change this behavior simply select the service from the listing and then click on the outgoing or incoming tab. Then select the desired behavior from the drop-down menu.
