POP with Leave Mail on Server
What does the Leave Mail on Server Feature Do? It allows you to continue using the POP e-mail protocol but with some of the multiple location functionality of the IMAP protocol. The idea is to use the Leave Mail on Server setting to allow you to check mail outside your office (at home or in a lab, for example) but be able to retrieve those messages again in the office. Here is an example of what happens to your mail on a typical day with this set up. Let's say you have a machine in your office that you use as your primary mail reader. But let's say you also like reading mail at home and occasionally on a lab machine.
  • When you first get into the office in the morning: You receive the mail you've gotten since you left the office, including anything you read at home the night before and did not delete.
  • When you leave the office and check your mail in the lab: You see all the mail you've gotten since you last checked your mail in your office.
  • When you get back to the office: You see all the mail you've gotten since you last checked your mail in your office, including anything you read in the lab and did not delete.
  • When you read mail that night at home: You see all the mail you've gotten since you last checked your mail in your office.
You see the pattern: Whenever you check your e-mail you see what you've gotten since you last checked in your office. The only exception is that if you read mail and delete it, it won't show up again. Advantages and Disadvantages Advantages of POP using Leave Mail on Server:
  1. All of your mail gathers in one central location, even if you read it elsewhere.
  2. You can continue using the POP protocol, which you may be used to.
  3. You don't have to worry about running out of space for mail on the server.
Disadvantages of POP using Leave Mail on Server:
  1. You won't be able to see all of your old mail from locations other than your central one. You only see old messages you recieved on this machine, plus anything new.
  2. You'll use local hard drive space to store mail
  3. If you need multiple locations, you should really be using IMAP
