This page will show you how to set up and use one of the following FTP clients. Each of these allows you to move files to and from the CAE servers from other computers on and off campus.
AbsoluteFTP and WS_FTP are NOT recommended because they only uses FTP (rather than SFTP). The CAE server will only allow SFTP connections to ensure the highest security for you and your data.
You can download a copy through http://shelf.doit.wisc.edu/securecrt/.
Go to Start > Internet > SecureFX. If you installed locally, it will be somewhere else in your start menu. The application should automatically launch the New Session Wizard, which looks something like this:
You will need to give it the following information:
| Protocol | SFTP |
| Host address | sftp.cae.wisc.edu |
| Port | 22 |
| Username | Your CAE username |
| Password | We recommend you leave this BLANK for security reasons. |
| Initial Directory | BLANK unless you want to begin in one of your subdirectories and not the top level of your home directory. |
| Session Name | Whatever you want to call this connection, CAE for example. |
| Description | Whatever description you want to give the connection. This is optional |
At the end of the wizard, press Finish to create the connection. Your screen should now look something like this:
Press 'Connect', enter your password when prompted, and you should be connected to the server, which will look something like this:
You can move files in either direction by locating them in the appropriate window and dragging them to the appropriate place. The easiest way to do this is to set up your Server and Local windows next to each other by going to Window > Tile Vertically. To upload a file to the servers, find it in your local files (likely on the right side) and drag it to the server folder you want it one. Downloading files is the same process reversed: find the file on the server and drag it to the folder you want it in locally.
SecureFX will ask you if you want to use Binary or ASCII to transfer. In general, use ASCII for text only files and binary for everything else.
You can download a copy through http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla/.
Start FileZilla by going to Start > Internet > FileZilla. If you installed locally, it will be somewhere else in your start menu. The application screen should look something like this:
Go to File > Site Manager . . . Click on New Site and enter the following information:
| Host | sftp.cae.wisc.edu |
| Port | 22 |
| Servertype | SFTP using SSH2 |
| Logontype | Normal |
| Username | Your CAE username |
| Password | We recommend you leave this BLANK for security reasons |
| Don't save password | Checked, unless you entered your password above |
Now choose Rename and enter the name you want for this FTP site (it can be anything). Your screen should now look like this:
Press Connect, enter your password when prompted, and you should be connected to the server, which will look something like this:
You can move files in either direction by locating them in the window and double clicking on them. Local files are on the left hand side of the screen under "local site" and double clicking them will move them onto the server and put them in the folder currently open on the right hand side. If you double click on a file on the right hand (server) side, it will download it to your machine in the folder currently open on the right hand side.
You can download a copy through http://winscp.net/eng/download.php.
Start WinSCP by going to Start > Internet > WinSCP3. If you installed locally, it will be somewhere else in your start menu. The first time you start WinSCP it will automatically open a configuration page that looks like this:
Entering the following information:
| Host name | sftp.cae.wisc.edu |
| Port number | 22 |
| Username | Your CAE username |
| Password | We recommend you leave this BLANK for security reasons |
| Protocol | SFTP (allow SCP fallback) |
Do NOT press Save or Login just yet.
If you want to access your Unix files (U drive on campus) by default, skip to step 5.
If you want to access your Windows files (F and I drive on campus) by default, continue on to step 4.
Click Save... and enter a name for the connection, CAE Windows for example.
Connect to the servers. Press Login, enter your password when prompted, and choose Yes at the Warning screen, and you should be connected to the server, which will look something like this:
You can move files in either direction by locating them in the window and dragging them to where you want them. To upload a file to the servers, find it in your local files (likely on the right side) and drag it to the server folder you want it one.
