- Policy: CAE does not allow users to run jobs in the background. Running
a job in the background slows the computer for other users. Extended remote
logins to CAE workstations for the purpose of running programs is
considered background jobs. Running jobs from the console of a workstation
for many hours may also be considered a background job.
- Convenience: Users do not have to baby sit their programs. They also do
not have to look for an idle workstation. Assuming an idle workstation is
found, the user does not need to guarantee that it remains idle. Users can
just submit their jobs to Condor and leave. When the job completes, Condor
sends the user an email message.
- Throughput: For users with many jobs, or one job with multiple input files,
Condor can speed up the turn around time of running the jobs. Condor does not
run any single job faster, but it may be able to find multiple idle machines,
at which case it will run multiple jobs concurrently. A user may be able to
submit 10 jobs to Condor and then have all the jobs run overnight without
worrying about any of the details.
The Condor Team has also amassed a rather lengthy list of people that
have found significant benefit in using Condor.
Take a look at what they
have to say.
