How to set up non-CAE managed desktop to access your CAE software.

This page attempts to equip you with most of the information you will need in order to access your CAE desktop at home, or anywhere outside of the College network. It will provide you with relevant security tips, instructions on how best to remotely access your desktop, as well as a few performance tweaks to help get things running smoothly. This page will not provide you with such basic information as how to install windows, or how to connect to the internet.

Security

Security is of extreme importance in the age of high-speed connections. A responsible internet user should ALWAYS be running the latest anti-virus and firewall software regardless of platform. The UW allows students, faculty, and staff to download the latest firewall and virus protection for FREE. Personal Computer Firewall Software.

There are also a number of hints available to help you be a smarter web surfer (Security Basics). This page provides a few basic guidelines which should help you avoid identity theft as well as other helpful security tips.

Windows XP

Accessing CAE programs from a machine not permanently on the College network.

Tethered software allows you to locally install and run some CAE owned and controlled software while you are connected to the internet. Tethered software requires you to Mapping a Network Drive if accessing from outside the COE network. Alternatively you may check out the software CD for installation. Tethered software can be very handy, but if you are going to be using multiple CAE applications it might be faster to run Remote Desktop.
